Career in Planning

Postby alessandro » Mon Feb 01, 2010 8:20 pm

Hi All,

I have just completed a three year arts degree from which i recieved a 2:2 qualification. As geogrpahy was part of my course i gained an interest in areas such as the environment and renewable energy etc. As environment and energy courses seem to require graduates from a science or engineering background i have been considering a career in town /environmental planning. But herein the problems arise. As places are limited here in ireland i fear that i willl struggle to gain entry to a masters . I was wondering if anybody knew of ways in which to gain work experience towards an application or else maybe a higher diploma in planning if any such courses exist? Is it any easier to gain entry to masters course in the uk wit a 2:2 degree?

Many thanks in advance

Have a look at www.ucd.ie/gpep/postgraduateprogrammes/mrup-mastersinregionalandurbanplanning and then for the UK, go to www.prospects.ac.uk/cms/ShowPage/Home_page/Find_courses_and_research_gs/p!eefXfmd?action=search&2waynocompress=1&keyword=Planning&x=0&y=0. It will be very difficult to get any experience in planning at the moment I would imagine. Most postgraduate courses related to renewable energy would probably look for a primary degree in engineering or science. You should also have a look at the MSc in Community and Local Development in DIT at www.dit.ie/study/postgraduate/browse/programmes/title,852,en.html.
